artist statement 2009, lilly tallula
I have an Advanced Diploma in Jewellery and Object Design. Making things gives me a fundamental sense of satisfaction. I like the handmade, the individual and the beautiful - in my kitchen as much as on my body. The search for beauty and wonder is part of the everyday. I believe in magical and mystical experience, in finding and sharing it.
My main joys are to do with music, reading, visual arts and crafts, and film. Excitement at the creativity of other people and the loveliness in the cosmos.
Materials each have their own fascination for me. I work with metals, glass and fibre including paper. The past year has seen an emphasis on recycled materials, in particular glass. I am also developing my knowledge of stone and synthetic polymers. And overall my strongest theme is love of colour. Colour represents energy; colour feeds the soul.
Working with my hands continues the artistic connection among humans which has been going on since ancient times; moreover it connects my own life from the inside. The knowledge of people from the past, and their wisdom, should not be lost. I believe we need wisdom as well as knowledge to live good lives. I relish dreaming, and the wisdom which the self sends through symbols to its waking part.
